Windows 11 and Wading the Muck.

It never feels like there's a breather between Windows upgrades. Just when you finish updating from one end-of-life (EOL) version, it's time to start planning for the next. And there's a reason for that.
For as long as I can remember, the equipment industry has lagged in preparing the next Windows version for ATMs, ITMs, and TCRs. The upcoming migration from Windows 10 is no exception. With deadlines looming, the usual questions-and costs- are back on the table:
Do I need core upgrades on my ATMs or ITMs?
How much is this going to cost me now?
How quickly will my provider push me to sign an order, only to take forever delivering the software?
How many times will I have to explain to my Security team why our ATMs aren't updated past the EOL date?
Are any of my ATMs old enough that replacing them makes more sense? And what else would I gain from an upgrade?
How can I turn this constant cost of doing business into an opportunity for added value?
Wait...did you say TCRs? My TCR might be running Windows? I hadn't even thought of that!
You Can't Ignore It-But You Can Approach It Smarter
Skipping the upgrade isn't an option. Running an unpatched, outdated operating system on an ATM is an easy way to damage a financial institution's reputation. Customers and members expect their banks and credit unions to safeguard their sensitive financial data. We've all seen what happens when a financial institution faces a security breach-the media pounces on it, and trust takes a hit.
The challenge isn't just the upgrade itself-it's how financial institutions are forced to navigate it. While providers may claim they're helping FIs manage these complex transitions, at the end of the day, they're selling something. With thoughts of customers to service, the process often feels more like an order-taking exercise than a strategic partnership.
And let's be honest-this isn't the kind of project financial institutions want to be working on. Banks and credit unions want to focus on initiatives that enhance customer and member experiences, reduce operational costs, and drive revenue-not another forced, high-cost Windows upgrade.
